Why would you need internet marketing for your local business?

Based on Google’s statistic report, 20% of searches on Google are related to location
It’s much easier for people to locate information through internet searches, rather than using yellow pages or by driving around.
People prefer to survey service providers over the web, as opposed to going store to store to shop for one.
Back in Feb 2011, we heard that smartphones (mobile devices) now surpass PCs in sales. Its growing trend is definite. One of the major features of the smartphone is Location Based Information, which lists local service providers in real time. As a local service vendor, you want to not just be part of it. You wish to stand out from others.

Most service vendors offering personal support are local services–to name a few–real estate agents, tax preparers, family doctors, dentists, auto repairing, restaurants, laundromats, hotels, shuttle buses, etc.

DCS has successfully provided service of internet marketing for local service vendors. We would like to share a few tips:

1. When structuring the website content, we ask that the client initially prepare for geographical-sensitive information and update it on a consistent basis.

– The basics for all local service vendors include

a.) A Map and Direction page with detailed descriptions of how to get to your office through at least two routes.

b.) A listing of available public transportation systems nearby (bus, BART, Train, or Light-rail)

Different type of service will provide specific contents:

– If you are in Hotel, Shuttle Bus services: Prepare local major landmark contents for travelers or travel planners. For example, if your hotel is near San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, mention in the website the hotel’s proximity to the Golden Gate. Also recommend a route full of exciting tourist spots and attractions.

– If you are a real estate agent/team: Statistics tell that over 75% of home-buyers determine their home location based on School/School district performance. You could bring up-to-date info or aggregated links of School API reports, school/district boundaries, address/school look-up of the area of your focus. People (and the search engine) will consider you the destination site. Moreover, including a blog to consistenly discuss present housing market trends, average home prices, and days-on-the-market will capture potential customers in the area.

2. Take advantage of FREE Internet Business Listing Services

In a sense, it’s yellow pages on the internet, but their presentation and user experience are entirely different. To name a few:

CitySearch.com — the oldest one, established back in middle of 90′
FourSquare.com — the social network approach to local business marketing.
YELP.com — the online leader in local business marketing.
Zagat — the leader of printed Restaurant Guilde, acquired by Google (Local Maps and Services) this month
Local.Yahoo.com: Yahoo Local Listing (Basic Listing- FREE, Enhanced $9.95)
Google Places for Business — (note, it’s different from www.google.com/places : which is designed for consumers)

When using the above internet business listing services, it is critical to complete these steps:

Fill in the exact address, phone number(s), service items, service hours, and acceptable payments
Submit pictures of your store and services
After the info has been posted, do ask your customer to add rating and comments to it
Prepare for negative comments. Do not panic. It will be overwritten by others.

From personal experience, in terms of web search-based local business marketing, YELP.com and Google for Business delivered the most effective results.

3. How Google approached this demand and how to create your listing on Google Places:

Google adjusted its name (and business strategy) from Google Local to Google Places in early 2010. It is now divided into two sections:
a.) Google Places for Business (GP4B) ( google.com/placesforbusiness)

b.) Google Places (designed for consumers as a social media approach, which could be part of the Google Plus toolset)

Create Your Listing on Google Places for Business

Google Places for Business is designed for business owners, not for internet specialists. Its tool design is intuitive. Most of the tasks can be done as long as you know how to fill an internet form. If you don’t feel too confident, ask for help from a specialist at a monthly $150-$200 charge. If you’re considering doing it by yourselves, here is an example to follow. Once it’s done, your business will be listed in the search results of both Google Web Search and Map Search in a few days.

Step 1: Start editing

Visiting www.google.com/placesforbusiness. you need a gmail account to sign-in

Step 2: Business Look-up

You will be asked to select Country and fill in your Business Phone Number. If your business phone number is already published, your business name and address will be populated by the system right away.

Step 3: Complete the form

Fill in the online form as detail as you could.

In the Categories fields, simply type in a few characters; the system will auto-complete matching category names that GP4B has prepared in advance.

As you scrolling down the form page, you will be prompted to upload pictures, and YouTube video. Don’t skip these steps. Research tells that visuals help increase the number of clicks.

Step 4: Submit the form.

Right after your submitting, Google will phone you and disclose your 5-digit PIN number. You should key in the PIN code in the Places editing page. This confirm your ownership to this GP4B page, and wraps up the editing process.

Step 5: Verify the posting

Next major step is verify if your listing has been published and can be searched properly.

In this screen capture, it’s the result by typed search keyword: San Jose Acupuncture School.

Using same key-phrases in Google map search:

In this search example, the key words are “Santa Cruz Acupuncture School”

See the display layout in a different format. Because the FBU is the dominated in Santa Cruz.

In this example, the keyword used is the major cross street near the service provider.

keyword: Fremont Warm Springs Massage,

It displays the pictures submitted to GP4Business by the owner. The picture instantly singles out the service vendor’s listing from other competitors.

The Business Owner’s GP4B Detail Page:

The map icon on the right-hand side map takes users to a place page prepared by GP4B. If the local business does not have a website, it becomes your website.

Step 6: Performance Tracking:

After all the effort put in, you’d want to know the performance of your own business listing. GP4B provides a report page for every individual Business Listing.

See the example: From the top:

The double line chart maps the daily fluctuation of map listing’s # of displays (impression) and # of clicks (action).

Next is the numbers: there are 4,628 impressions, 285 actions. Basically, the Map Listing has been shown 4,628 times due to Web/Map searches. People have clicked on the listing 285 times after seeing the listing. The Conversion rate is about 6%, which is a pretty good number.

The lowest section of the page is the keyword ranking. It shows which search words have allowed people to see your map listing. You may edit the contents of your listing based on the rankings. Google tries to sell their AdWords service here. No doubt, it’s a good reference for any business owner to use the set of keywords when bidding in the AdWords service.
